Sierra moved to New York in , aged 18, before relocating to Paris to study for a career as an opera singer. The sisters lost touch with each other for three years as Bianca stayed in New York. Once they met back up, everything changed. Both sang, Sierra played the acoustic guitar and whatever improvised instruments they could find.

Hotel Vegas Patio E 6th St. Directed by Sepia and shot in Buenos Aires, the song and video shows solidarity for the everyday perils women encounter. Like many of our past records, we wrote and gathered much of the material at our farm studio in the south of France with minimal equipment, vintage toys and antique instruments. Going back to a ‘4-track’ style approach, we limited ourselves to essential, acoustic accompaniment, played by us, and select percussion, toys from our old suit cases dating back to the “La Maison” days.
We ended up in Argentina where we finished the recordings and mixed the record with engineer Nicolas Kalwill with who We ended up in Argentina where we finished the recordings and mixed the record with engineer Nicolas Kalwill with whom we’ve worked on two previous records. The spirit of Buenos Aires added to our already teen-romance-nostalgic-mood where we spontaneously shot a music video casting over 30 local girls.
FADER shared the entire Heartache City exclusively and called it “a welcome return to what made them great in the first place. This last live recording was done in Milan on the second day of CocoRosie’s European summer festival tour, played with their band Tez and Takuya Nakamura. The five women made art and organized a lecture series as a call to arms to reorganize as a species and affirm archetypally feminine values. In their eleven years as CocoRosie, the sisters have released five albums: Tales of A Grass Widow , Grey Oceans , The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn , Noah’s Ark , and their first album, La Maison de Mon Reve — each one inspiring controversy and debate in equal amounts to praise; such is their fearlessness and willingness to take risks with their art.
This strong creative vision runs through every aspect of their work – from videos to live performance utilizing theatrical costumes and make up which they create alongside each new body of songs.

CocoRosie – ‘Tales Of A Grasswidow’
CocoRosie about “Smash My Head”: “For us, our song “Smash My Head” is a running-on-fire cry from the teenage heart, an inner scream we never dared to let out. The song climaxes in an exaltation, an expression of ecstatic death. It journeys from a hard-knock desert childhood scene to a transcendent cosmic passing to another realm. This year they presented the second series of songs written for a collaboration with the Kronos Quartet at their Jazz Festival in San Francisco, which is leading into a recorded album with songs composed by CocoRosie in the near future.
conflicts with their new band, CoCoRosie have cancelled some of the dates on their upcoming European tour, including their date at Sage Gateshead.
Originally a duo , the group was formed when Bianca, who was living in New York City at the time, made an impromptu visit to Sierra at her Paris apartment, reconnecting with her for the first time in ten years. They later expanded to a group and added various backing musicians , including a bassist , keyboardist , beatboxer , and synth player. Their childhood has been described as “bizarre” and “nomadic”. In a interview, Bianca described their childhood, stating “we spent our summers hiking from reservation to reservation I remember being in peyote circles as a kid, sitting in tepees full of smoke We always felt pretty much like freaks, but we felt good about it.
We didn’t have any rules or anything. We had total freedom. It was hard to meet people who had the same values as us. We just sort of carry that with us today. We have pow-wows in our apartment, with bottles of cheap beer. It has to manifest itself somehow. At the time, the sisters generally disliked their childhood experiences, but came to appreciate aspects of them that would later influence CocoRosie’s music.

Sierra Casady, the other half of her sister Bianca’s freak folk outfit CocoRosie, sings operatically in a cap emblazoned with the word PRIDE and a hot pink skirt that expands as she spins. Still wearing her black and orange performance garb, Bianca finds me in the media trailer behind the stage. The Casadys have a nomadic history. Fate brought them together in Paris in , where Bianca was writing poetry and Sierra was studying opera singing. Once the sisters reunited, they formed a band and began piecing together forgotten bits of their family history.
The story lies in fragments throughout CocoRosie’s six records. Since then, the Casadys have relocated from a Williamsburg loft to the French barn where they wrote their most recent album Heartache City. What were your biggest goals with it?
A writer more prone to hyperbole might imagine a post-digital Karen Dalton possessing the bodies of conjoined twins raised in the crumbling decadence depicted in Kennedy-scion documentary Grey Gardens. Self-produced, La Maison… is an eerie, sparse, haunted record; instrumentation that sounds like field recordings, or sounds transferred from well-worn 78s, threaded around unfussy synthetic clicks and glitchy backing and delicate harp runs, lovely as unexpected pools of sunlight.
Then there are the voices:a lilting, jazzy rasp very Karen Dalton , oddly child-like sighs, a soaring but never overbearing operatic trill, like the return of an echo. They sing words that twist and turn, resisting interpretation but operating, surely, by their own internal logic, dipped in a kind of Southern gothic both sensual and ominous.
The bizarre world of CocoRosie starts with the band’s unusual formation. CocoRosie has now released four critically acclaimed albums Date Night China: An American Woman’s Experience Using Tantan in Beijing ().
Heartache City , Bianca and Sierra Casady’s sixth album as CocoRosie, intentionally upends the sonic trajectory the band appeared to be following. On ‘s Grey Oceans and ‘s Tales of a GrassWidow production grew increasingly layered and prismatic. On that record the sisters worked with minimal effects and in maximum seclusion. Heartache City isn’t completely stripped bare, but it is a case of stylistic ideas coming full circle, or maybe full spiral.
An example of stepping back as a way to advance. On La maison and the two albums that followed, CocoRosie’s auditory and semiotic mashups confused and upset people. Time has softened some of the criticism. Or, more likely, the Casadys have held a singular worldview long enough earn respect from those who first viewed the project as a trifle. In a calmly unfolding voice, quite different than her house of mirrors vocal style, Bianca shared thoughts on the new album and the band’s conflicted reputation.
Not really. I’ve actually been doing it all these years. My sister’s not that talkative, actually. So I’ve kind of gotten used to representing the two of us. We sit through interviews side-by-side and I do most of the talking a lot of the time.

CocoRosie has now released four critically acclaimed albums though they did earn some derision for the vomiting unicorn cover of their sophomore effort , and their eclectic sound has become the backdrop for Prada shows and Kenzo commercials. CocoRosie, “Grey Oceans” Mixing opera, electronica and folk genres, eccentric sister duo CocoRosie’s fourth Tonight is her due date.
In the space of four years and two albums, CocoRosie have carved out their own little niche in the world of alternative music. Their kooky folk, which blends opera singing, the sound of children’s toys and scratchy hip-hop beats with scabrous fairy-tale lyrics, has won them a wealth of fans. They are friends with Devendra Banhart and Antony Hegarty of the Johnsons , and have collaborated with both of them. CocoRosie are not like other bands.
To break the routine of sterile hotel interviews in the middle of a three-week European press tour, it was suggested that they might like to have dinner somewhere instead. And so, that evening, never having met or even spoken to them before, the Casady sisters turn up for dinner chez journaliste. The elder of the pair by two years, she has long, black, raven hair and a shooting star drawn on her cheek.
